-Abortion Rate at Lowest Level Since Roe v. Wade
According to recent research, the abortion rate in the U.S. is at the lowest rate ever since Roe v. Wade. Here’s the story from NPR:
The abortion rate in the United States fell to its lowest level since the historic Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision legalized abortion nationwide, a new report finds.
The report by the Guttmacher Institute, a research group that supports legalized abortion, puts the rate at 14.6 abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age (ages 15-44) in 2014. That’s the lowest recorded rate since the Roe decision in 1973. The abortion rate has been declining for decades — down from a peak of 29.3 in 1980 and 1981.
The report also finds that in 2013, the total number of abortions nationwide fell below 1 million for the first time since the mid-1970s.
Response: Great news. Looking at the research, the abortion rate has been in decline since 1981. Even more remarkable, the rate (14.6) is now lower than it was in 1973 ( 16.3) when the Supreme Court legalized abortion for the whole country in the first place.
The Pro-Life cause has been successful in changing the minds of a majority of Americans when it comes to abortion. Unfortunately, it has been impossible to reverse Roe v. Wade even though it was an over reach by an activist court with little real basis in the Constitution. This is one of the issues that it should have been left for the states to decide. There is some hope that it might change in the next 4 years if President Trump gets to appoint a couple of new judges to SCOTUS.
Regardless, the tide of public opinion has turned and there are now even fewer abortions per 1000 in the country than there were at the beginning in 1973. *Top
