Westward expansion, also referred to as Manifest Destiny, was the American drive across the country from the east coast towards the Pacific Ocean.
Many agreed with John O’Sullivan, who said that it was America’s destiny to inhabit the land from coast to coast. It was O’Sullivan who coined the phrase Manifest Destiny.
Nevertheless, Americans achieved this destiny in 1848. Even though explorers were well established in the lands west of the Mississippi River, there was a great westward drive after 1848. TSW looks at eight photographs from the era that truly depict the essence of the Western Migration.
The photo above shows Pony Express rider Frank Webner. The average Pony express rider could cover 250 miles in a 24-hour period.
The pony express was the fastest method of communication into the western frontier prior to the telegraph being implemented. The Pony Express only operated for about a year and a half before being put out of business by the telegraph.
