On July 9th, NASA announced that it would be sending another rover to Mars in 2020. However, instead of simply going to explore the planet and seek out any signs that there was once water on the Red Planet, the 2020 Rover will be specifically going to hunt for any signs of past life. (4)
By many accounts, the mission of the current Rover Curiosity has been somewhat of a disappointment. The Curiosity landing – which we watched live – itself was an engineering feat, and far from disappointing. However, each piece of news or impending announcement from the Rover team has turned out to be anti-climactic.
This latest effort to get another Rover onto Mars with the right tools and gear to search for past life, may be an effort to keep the Rover mission relevant to the scientific community and important in the eyes of the public.
