An animal that looks like a cross between a house cat and a teddy bear has been discovered in the cloud forests of Ecuador and Columbia. The creature is the first new carnivore to be discovered in the Western Hemisphere in 35 years.
For more than 100 years the creature has been incorrectly identified and exhibited at zoos and in museum cabinets. A group of Smithsonian scientists journeyed to the cloud forests of South America where they found a cute-looking olinguito. The finding has been described as being “an incredibly rare discovery of the 21st century”. (1)
Despite its cat-like appearance and bear-esque features, the researchers said that the creature belongs to the Procyonidae family. Raccoons, olingos, kinkajous and coatis are Procyonids, which inhabit a wide range of environments. For more than half a century, the olinguito has been misidentified as its larger cousin, the olingo.
