On Saturday, 68-year-old S. Robson Walton, the chairman of Walmart, was in Laguna Seca, California, racing his Maserati, Ferrari and two other cars. A group of protestors staged a protest in front of the racetracks and a nearby Walmart. They said Walton’s cars were worth $16 million, according to AOL Jobs.
The protesters say they are waging a fight for respect and justice from the largest corporation in America.
Tony Barrera, a City Councilman from Salinas, one of the protestors told The Herald News:
“The Waltons are very well off, and I admire them for that, but when Rob Walton is out here racing $16 million worth of vehicles (a Ferrari, a Maserati, a Corvette and a Scarab) and his employees are struggling to put food on their tables, I think any reasonable person is going to ask, 'What's wrong with this picture?' I'm here to say to the Waltons, 'You're entitled to your wealth … but what about them?'”
Walmart is facing increased pressure to improve its workplace environment.
For the past several months, Walmart workers in California, New York and Illinois have become more vocal about their workplace.
Activists say the company uses illegal and immoral tactics that result in injuries and deaths of its workers in the corporation's domestic and overseas units.
Labor groups say Walmart's response to the protests is to terminate the workers who are speaking out. But Walmart officials say the protesters are motivated by unions who want to take control of the company.
