Earlier this summer Britain’s seagulls took centre stage in the media with reports of the birds getting “drunk” on flying ants and behaving yobbishly.
This time, it’s Russia’s feathered friends in the media spotlight, in the guise of “zombie pigeons”.
Members of the public in Moscow have been contacting the authorities, alarmed about the strange behavior of the pigeons in the city. In contrast to the lively birds alertly scrounging for food we are familiar with, the zombie pigeons of Moscow are lethargic, fearless and in a seemingly state of stupor.
Talking to Europe Radio Liberty, one resident of the Russian capital said:
“When I walk to work I usually see pigeons running and jumping around. But recently they haven’t been reacting to anything at all. When a person walks past them, they used to fly away. But now they just sit there in a kind of funk and don’t even pay attention to you. They’re just not normal. I’ve seen some pigeons behaving very strangely, turning around in circles,” the Moscow resident added. (1)
