If you’re a motorist, you’ll know for yourself the dangers of driving when a light is shone in your eyes. Imagine having to deal with a bright light being directed your way if you were a pilot coming into landing? Such potentially catastrophic dangers have caused the FBI to issue a warning about the dramatic increase in the use of lasers to target airplanes flying over New York City. In a statement the FBI said that the number of reported instances involving people pointing lasers at planes has risen by 17 percent over the last year. Lasers can temporarily blind pilots and crew and in some cases permanently blind people. The number of injuries related to the lasers have increased as well, stated the FBI. (1) Two Recent Incidents The two most recent incidents involving targeting lasers at planes in the New York area occurred on October 15, 2013. The first laser targeted the cockpit of the Shuttle America flight 5973, which was lit up by a green laser on the final approach to La Guadia Airport. Read more…
