When a cookie passes a five-year-old child’s taste test it’s a winner in my book because isn’t that what a cookie is supposed to do? Cookies should bring smiles to the hearts and faces of children and in this particular case it was our friends’ daughter who was doing the smiling. Of course, the adults were all smiling, too, although that probably had more to do with the margaritas we were drinking, but yes! These oatmeal raisin cookies with chocolate chips are good – so good!

All of this cookie taste-testing happened at a picnic in the park with friends on Sunday. It was a shoes-off-let’s-blow-bubbles-and-listen-to-Simon-&-Garfunkel sort of afternoon and the kind of scene that would have driven me to jealousy had it not been us (“How come we never go on a picnic? It looks so fun!”). Except this time it was us and I can confirm that it was so much fun. I like to think people passing by our little make-shift picnic area were a smidge envious inspired – we had secret margaritas in plastic cups, deviled eggs, barbecue chicken sliders, bite-sized sausage rolls, and a big bag of oatmeal raisin cookies with chocolate chips. We had tall trees to provide shade, soft blankets to stretch out on, and each other’s company to pass the time. We were the perfect picnic advertisement.

Oh, and about those cookies…

I adapted a recipe from Martha Stewart by cutting the whole thing in half, scaling back the flour a bit, bumping up the brown sugar and oatmeal amounts, and adding some cinnamon and nutmeg. The recipe produces a lightly spiced and wonderfully soft and chewy cookie full of plump raisins and melty chocolate chips. Make a batch of these I guarantee they’ll disappear fast.

These oatmeal raisin cookies have a wonderful texture – the raisins and chocolate chips are optional, but I don’t recommend leaving them out!

Recipe type: Desserts

Ingredients
  • 1 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1¼ cups old fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large eggs
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cups raisins
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Instructions
  1. Whisk the first six ingredients together in a medium sized bowl.
  2. In a separate large bowl, or stand mixer, cream the butter and sugars together until light and fluffy (be sure to scrape the bowl at least once). Add the egg and vanilla and continue mixing until well incorporated.
  3. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ones, in few batches at a time, and mix until the dough comes together either by hand with a spatula or on a low mixer setting. Fold in the raisins and chocolate chips.
  4. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and stick it in the fridge for thirty minutes to chill.
  5. Scoop a generous tablespoon of cookie batter and drop it onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment. Space the cookies an inch or so apart. Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Let the cookies cool for a few minutes on the pan before transferring to a wire rack.
  6. Makes 2 dozen.
