A Week in Williamsburg

(Before It's News)

I'm a bit behind on my travel posts, but I wanted to make sure I captured our trip to Brooklyn earlier this year. Adam spent five weeks in Brooklyn over April and May, so Hannah and I flew down for a week in the middle to help break up his time away.

We rented an apartment in Williamsburg through airbnb for the week (top left). After we were settled, we headed out for a late lunch at one of our favourite Williamsburg restaurants (middle left), then made our way to the Brooklyn Bridge Park to ride Jane's Carousel. After a few rides, we bought Hannah a balloon flower. She was thrilled, then devastated when she accidentally popped it a few minutes later.

In addition to carousels, Hannah loves riding the subway, so we decided to ride it all the way to the New York Aquarium. Parts of the aquarium are still being rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy, but we enjoyed seeing seals, a walrus, penguins, and even sharks. We took Hannah to the Central Park Zoo on our last trip to NYC, so it was fun to check out the aquarium this time.

That evening we had dinner at Paulie Gee's in Greenpoint. Their pizza is so good, and Hannah loved watching them roll out dough again and again and again (meanwhile, I was coveting their marble worktop).
Our rental was practically next door to McCarren Park, so we managed to fit in plenty of playground time despite the cool, cloudy weather. In fact, our week was pretty much all coffee shops, park visits, Peter Pan donuts, shopping (Beacon's Closet for Adam and me and Flying Squirrel for Hannah), and good food.

Our rental was also a short walk from Twinkle Playspace, which Hannah loved. I think we went there twice. It was nice to have an indoor play option for those rainy days while Adam was working.

We also took the subway to Battery Park for a glimpse of the Statue of Liberty and a ride on the Seaglass Carousel (Adam and I did the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island tour years ago, but figured Hannah was still too young). We arrived around 11:30 and had the place to ourselves.

Afterwards, Hannah debated which carousel she liked best while we walked back to Brooklyn across the Brooklyn Bridge. It was a windy, but great walk.

Like most kids her age, Hannah loves dinosaurs, so a visit to the American Museum of Natural History was high on our list. The highlight was the 122-foot-long Titanosaur, a species so new it hasn't been formally named yet.

We also saw the Hayden Planetarium Space Show. Hannah was completely enthralled, despite the show being way over her head (literally and figuratively).

We cut through Central Park on our way to the subway and back to Williamsburg. It was another great visit, and we look forward to going back. Until next time, New York!
