In my last post, I shared a few “before” photos of our home's main bath. We've already started on some inexpensive updates that will make the room more liveable while we save for a major reno, but mood boards help me visualize where I'm going and keep me on track. I usually start with an inspiration photo – this time my inspiration is the palette and modern, relaxed feel of this Swedish living space.
The first thing I did was update the lighting to these inexpensive “Sweedish Ball” fixtures (1). They really brighten the room and I love how simple and cute they are. I removed the wallpaper using this method and painted the walls in Behr's 'Silver Shadow' (2). I chose the colour for the playroom and used the leftover paint in here, where it reads as a pale blue (it shows up as more of a platinum in the playroom). The vanity colour is SICO's 'Kensington Grey' (again, a bit of a chameleon that looks more blue in here).
After painting the vanity, I swapped out the hardware for three of these Martha Stewart Living 3 in. finger pulls (4), new hinges, and a couple of football knobs I already owned. It's amazing what a little paint and new hardware can do! I love the wood tones in my inspiration photo, so I'm planning to update the existing mirror with wood stain (I'm thinking either Minwax's 'Weathered Oak' or 'Classic Grey'). I'm also thinking about adding a stool or some kind of shelf unit to fill the wasted space across from the vanity.
The current flooring has to go, and I found this cute, affordable vinyl sheet flooring (3) online at Lowe's. Unfortunately Lowe's doesn't have stores in Nova Scotia and doesn't ship this particular item, so I did a quick Google search and discovered that Centura (we ordered our powder room wall tile through them) also carries Tarkett flooring. You can see how the flooring actually looks in a bathroom here.
I'm on the hunt for a unique wall hook (7), and I'd like to bring in a little pattern with a cute hand towel like this (5). I'll add some black to the room with picture frames, and my air plants have already found a home in here.
We'll reuse the shower curtain (6) from our old bathroom, and I've read enough reviews that I'm ready to try Rustoleum's Tub & Tile Refinishing Kit. I like the shape of the current tiles and I don't think we can do much worse than the existing floral pattern, so painting it is (wish me luck!).
My goal is to update the room for less than $500. While not insignificant, it feels like a reasonable amount to spend to get the bathroom looking good enough to enjoy for the next few years.
Obviously I've been busy in here, so I'll share some progress shots soon.
