Strong and shallow earthquake meassuring  M6.9 struck near Andreanoff Islands at Aleutian archipelago on September 26 at 23:39:54 UTC. Epicenter was located only 34 km (21 miles) S of Tanaga Volcano (51.634°N, 178.293°W) at depth of 9.9 km (6.2 miles) in the middle of the steep subduction slope. The closest populated community is Adak with 326 residents, at a distance of 131 km from the epicenter.

USGS initially recorded M6.9 but was later downgraded to 6.4. EMSC registered 6.9 at the same depth. Alaska Earthquake Information Center recorded M6.2 at depth of 5 km (3 miles).

Based on the earthquake magnitude, location and historic tsunami records a damaging tsunami is not expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska coast. Some of these areas may experience non-damaging sea level changes.
