Deep subduction M7.2 earthquake hit Colombia
Powerful earthquake M7.2 hit Colombia at 16:31 UTC on September 30, 2012. The epicenter was located 9 km (5 miles) WNW of Isnos, Colombia (1.969°N, 76.315°W) at depth of 150.4 km (93.5 miles). USGS initially measured magnitude 7.4 but was later revisited at 7.1 and again to 7.3 with depth of 150.4 km and EMSC recorded magnitude 7.2 at depth of 152 km.
Considering the depth of the earthquake, this earthquake didn’t cause any significant damage. If this magnitude occurred at shallow depth, the earthquake would have been very devastating one with lots of casualties and heavy damage.
This depth is typical for a subduction earthquake and it is generated by a moving Nazca plate, which hang below the continental South American Plate.
