The best independent earthquake reporting website in the world
This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -
October , 2012 volcano activity
Most of the activity today at the volcanoes we watch can be characterized as “normal” day-to-day behavour. Exceptions include: Machin volcano (Colombia) (station CIMA) where aftershocks of Monday’s M4.6 mid-crustal earthquake continue (as well as very small shallow earthquakes), nearby Galeras volcano (station ANGV) which is experiencing a swarm of small earthquakes, Pacaya volcano (station PCG) (Guatemala) where volcano-seismicity has recently increased, White Island volcano (New Zealand), continuously shuddering with tremor, and Tongariro volcano where small local earthquakes have appeared on seismograms there during the past week.
Volcanoes showing “normal” behaviour include: Long Valley Caldera (CA) (station MMX1) with small earthquakes skittering along the feature’s southern boundary, Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico) averaging more than one exhalation of gas and ash per hour (as well as a M1.8 volcano-tectonic earthquake) during the past 48 hours, and numerous volcanic earthquakes (and some tremor) at Fuego volcano (Guatemala)(station FG3), San Miguel volcano (El Salvador) (station VSM), San Cristobal and Telica (Nicaragua) (stations CRIN and TELN respectively) and Nevado Del Ruiz (Colombia) (station OLLZ).
Recent satellite imagery shows SO2-rich plumes drifting from Nevado Del Ruiz (Colombia), Ambrym (Vanuatu) and Manam (New Guinea).
