(Before It's News)

November 18, 2012KURIL ISLANDS - A hot spot is visible on recent MODIS satellite images at Chirpoi volcano in the Kuriles. A dense steam plume drifting SE can be seen on a Aqua satellite image from 16 Nov 2012. Although KVERT lists the volcano as green, it is likely that some activity is occurring at the volcano. Chirpoi, a small island lying between the larger islands of Simushir and Urup, contains a half dozen volcanic edifices constructed within an 8-9 km wide, partially submerged caldera. The southern rim of the caldera is exposed on nearby Brat Chirpoev Island. The last eruption occurred at the volcano in 1982. –Volcano Discovery
