(Before It's News)

Tropical Cyclone Nilam is located approximately 35 nm south-southwest of Chennai, India and is moving west-northwestward at 12 knots. Nilam has made landfall over southern India and the low-level circulation center is becoming elongated. The system will weaken as it continues to track generally northwestward across southern India and dissipate below the warning threshold intensity of 35 knots in the next 24 hours due to land interaction.

The storm started off as a low pressure formation over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands more than 10 days ago and developed into a full-fledged cyclone as it approached the east coast near Chennai on Wednesday. The cyclone made landfall between Mamallapuram and Kalpakkam and strong winds preceded the storm. Winds of speeds of up to 80 km/h uprooted 100 trees and 50 electricity poles, leaving motorists stranded and almost every locality in the city without power, according to Times of India.

Summary

Early on October 30, RSMC New Delhi reported that Tropical Storm Two (02B) had intensified into a Cyclonic Storm and named it as Nilam while it was located about 100 km (60 mi) to the northeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka. During that day, Nilam moved towards the northwest, while continuing to develop further.

Early on October 31, the JTWC reported that Nilam had reached its 1-minute peak wind speeds of 100 km/h (60 mph), while RSMC New Delhi reported 3-minute peak sustained wind speeds of 85 km/h (55 mph). Later that day the system made landfall on the Indian Coast near Mahabalipuram, before the JTWC issued its final advisory on Nilam as it started to rapidly weaken over land.
