November 28, 2012 volcano activity

News reports indicate that the Plosky Tolbachik (Kamchatka) is in eruption again after 36 years of dormancy.  KVERT reports a 4 cm depth ashfall from a probable flank fissure (likely basaltic andesite in composition) extended up to 35 km from the volcano yesterday.  Once the eruption locations concentrate to a single vent, ash clouds may rise to 30+ thousand feet according to KVERT.  So far, recent satellite imagery (SO2) has not detected the eruption, indicating a relatively low-level eruption plume (>20,000 ft asl).
Elsewhere, relatively small ash plumes have been ejected by Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico) an average of two per hour during the past 24 hours. The Popocatepetl seismogram shows low-level volcanic tremor (repeated many times due to a software glitch!).
Volcanic tremor has increased and become continuous again at Pacaya volcano (Guatemala) (station PCG) during the past 24 hours.
Volcanic tremor remains elevated and sustained at Masaya volcano (Nicaragua) again today (station MSN).
Seismograms for the Colombian volcanoes have not updated the past few days.
Co-eruptive seismicity at Reventador volcano (Ecuador) consists mainly of low-frequency earthquakes rather than continuous tremor today. (station CONE)
Tremor is up at Ruapehu volcano (New Zealand) along with small local earthquakes.  Nearby Tongariro volcano is behaving similarly, and White Island volcano just keeps on chugging away with strong, harmonic tremor (compare tremor level on spectrogram at White Island with that recorded at Ruapehu and Tongariro!).
Recent satellite imagery shows an SO2-enriched plume drifting from Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) and Manam(?) or Langila volcanoes (New Guinea), and a possible eruption in-progress at Soputan volcano (Sangihe arc).
