The best independent earthquake reporting website in the world
This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -
December 16, 2012 volcano activity
KVERT reports very strong volcanic tremor coming from the Plosky Tolbachik (Kamchatka Peninsula) today. The eruption plume continues to hover around 3 km height.
Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador) is in full eruption today complete with locally heavy ashfall and pyroclastic flows which, combined with rainfall, generate a potential lahar hazard in drainages surrounding the volcano. The Tungurahua seismogram (station RETU) has been saturated with strong volcanic tremor since early this morning. EPN reports at least two large explosions today which generated ash clouds that rose to above 7 km height.
Exhalations at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico) now average nearly three per hour. The Popo seismogram shows low level volcanic tremor and two local earthquakes.
The rate of volcanic earthquakes at Pacaya volcano (Guatemala) (station PCG) appears to have diminished somewhat in the past 24 hours. The same can be said of the level of tremor and volcanic earthquakes at nearby Fuego volcano (station FG3). Volcanic tremor at Santa Maria volcano (STG6) remains relatively strong.
All of the Guatemalan volcano seismograms show aftershocks continuing from last months large offshore earthquake (the larger events on each record). Today’s volcano cam shot from Fuego volcano shows a small explosion at the summit of the volcano with an active lava flow descending the volcano’s flank.
Small earthquakes and weak volcanic tremor continue to affect Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (station OLLZ) as earthquake activity continues deep (15 km) beneath nearby Machin volcano today (station CIMA).
Poor Reventador volcano (station CONE) has been the center of our volcanic attention in Ecuador for several months now…Not today! Try as it might, Tungurahua has Reventador seismically (…and volcanically!) beat today.
Small earthquakes are apparent on seismograms at both Tongariro and Ruapehu volcanoes (New Zealand) and volcanic tremor appears to have increased (in the 2-5 Hz range) the past two days at White Island volcano (see spectrogram).
Recent satellite data shows SO2-enriched plumes (of varying sizes) drifting from Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico), Turrialba volcano (Costa Rica), Ambrym volcano (Vanuatu), Langila volcano (New Guinea), Mayon volcano (Philippines) and Nyiragongo volcano (DRC).
