The best independent earthquake reporting website in the world
This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world. This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -
December 9, 2012 volcano activity
KVERT reports continued high amplitude volcanic tremor accompanying strombolian explosive activity and lava flow at Plosky Tolbachik. Tremor amplitude the past 24 hours has reached the highest level since the onset of the eruption on 27 November. This suggests further narrowing of magmatic channels to the surface with no letup in the amount of magma supply.
Seismicity at the Coso Volcanic Field (CA) has eased considerably overnight, with less than a handful of earthquakes (M0.0
Apparently not to be outdone by its southern neighbor, a flurry of small earthquakes commenced overnight beneath Mammoth Mountain volcano (CA) (station MDP1).
Activity at Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico) has also increased over the weekend with an average of over 2 exhalations per hour. The strength of said emissions of gas and ash are also reported to be more forceful. The Popo seismogram lends credence to the reports with higher amplitude volcanic tremor and more local seismic events than we’ve seen at this volcano for a while.
Still unable to access seismograms for the Guatemalan volcanoes, but the Fuego volcanocam continues to show an active lava flow descending the flank of the volcano.
Some internal unease at a few Nicaraguan volcanoes today. Small earthquakes are still apparent on seismograms recorded at Momotombo (station MOMN). A few low-amplitude volcanic earthquakes are visible on the Cerro Negro volcano seismogram (station CNGN), and pulses of higher amplitude volcanic tremor occurred at Concepcion volcano (station CONN) overnight.
Low level volcanic tremor and small earthquakes also affect Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) (station OLLZ), and a short pulse of volcanic tremor was recorded at nearby Galeras volcano (station ANGV) today.
Co-eruptive seismicity has simmered somewhat at Reventador volcano (Ecuador)(station CONE).
Numerous small local earthquakes dot seismograms at Ruapehu volcano (New Zealand), fewer dot seismograms at nearby Tongariro volcano and a continuous stream of volcanic tremor shakes White Island volcano again today.
Recent satellite imagery shows SO2-enriched plumes drifting from Plosky Tolbachik (Kamchatka Peninsula), Nyiragongo (DRC) and Ambrym (Vanuatu) volcanoes, with weak SO2 anomalies detected over Nevado Del Ruiz (Colombia), and Turrialba (Costa Rica)
