The best independent earthquake reporting website in the world
This (almost) daily post intends to follow up the activity changes of volcanoes all over the world.
This post is written by geologist Richard Wilson who specializes in Volcano seismicity and Armand Vervaeck. Please feel free to tell us about new or changed activity if we haven’t written about it. -
January 1, 2013 volcano activity
Happy New Year to all the raders of our Volcano Activity reports !
It seems the volcanoes we watch all feel like I do today, groggy and listless, as seismicity at all but Little Sitkin volcano (Aleutian arc) is in decline. The earthquake activity at Little Sitkin is really nothing, compared with what we’ve seen at the volcano at times during this past year, but earthquake numbers and magnitudes are slightly up at Little Sitkin the past day (station LSSA).
Trains of small “chugging” earthquakes also appeared at Tongariro volcano (New Zealand) overnight, but have since subsided. White Island just keeps on keepin’ on with continuous strong volcanic tremor into 2013.
Relatively low-level eruptive activity continues at Plosky Tolbachik (Kamchatka Peninsula), Popocatepetl volcano (Mexico) (the small earthquakes on the Popo seimogram are regional events), at Fuego (station FG3), Santa Maria (station STG6), and possibly at Pacaya volcano (station PCG) all in Guatemala, Galeras volcano (station ANGV) (Colombia), Copahue volcano (Chile-Argentina border) and both Tungurahua (station RETU) and Reventador (station CONE) volcanoes (Ecuador).
Only Nevado Del Ruiz volcano (Colombia) has produced a significant SO2-enriched plume visible to satellite sensors during the past day.
