Most earthquakes in Idaho have origins (the epicenter) far from plate boundaries. Much of the earth’s crust
in southern and central Idaho has undergone tremendous stretching, resulting in parallel, linear mountains and valleys. This region is called the Basin and Range and extends into the adjoining States of Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada. Basin and Range stretching is continuing today. Earthquakes from these crustal movements can also cause severe ground shaking in Idaho.
Idaho earthquakes may be associated with magmatic activity. This activity is associated with the
“Yellowstone Hotspot.” The hotspot is a conduit carrying molten rock (magma) from deep within the
earth into the crust. Pressures within the hotspot zone lead to earthquakes. Although there are
currently no surface releases of magma through volcanoes or volcanic vents, the hotspot is very seismically active. Dozens (um, not hundreds?) of small earthquakes are recorded in the Yellowstone region each month.

“The Bear Lake fault zone is recognized as one of the most active in Idaho.”
“One of the most dangerous faults in southeast Idaho is the northernmost segment of the Wasatch fault near Malad City. The Wasatch is one of the longest and most active normal faults in the world. This fault extends from central Utah 240 miles north to within 30 miles of Pocatello.”
I repeat…”one of the LONGEST and MOST ACTIVE normal faults IN THE WORLD!”

“Idaho is the fifth most active state for earthquakes,” said Boise State seismologist Jim Zollweg.
Zollweg says Idaho has hundreds of active fault lines, as many as 20 within a 100 mile radius of Boise. And he says Idaho averages a 6.5 magnitude quake or greater every 15 years.”
What are your thoughts on the Teton fault line as a risk? One pic I saw it ran from Idaho nearly down to Las Vegas vicinity, through Salt Lake. I’m not familiar with the area, that’s why I’m asking.
I appreciate your info but seriously this is like arguing over a glass of milk that got spilt, while the house got blown away from a Tornado. The main point i see is this caldera is unstable and about too do something. Hopefully it will relieve some pressure, in a smaller way. I do appreciate your info though srsly1 Lets hope for hope. Utah just announced it is doing a Great Utah Shakeout drill on this Thursday. We have been having a lot of things going on in the school system as well teaching our kids emergency preparedness and duck and cover. I know its normal to practice these things but they have become a lot more frequent and they.
I think it’s very important to hold drills of the sort. It’s also important to have these at home as well.
