Update 09:21 UTC : OCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs)

Situation Overview as published by OCHA yesterday May 1

Six days into the response, the ongoing relief efforts continue to focus on reaching a greater number of areas, in particular the remote and hard-to-reach areas where many of the poorest and most affected remain. It is becoming evident that a scale-up of operations is required to ensure immediate and principled assistance reaches people in desperate need within the next six weeks, in advance of the monsoon season. After the field visits and meetings with Government authorities and partners, the Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos emphasized the urgent need to provide emergency shelter and basic goods and services to people affected, as the weather conditions continue to deteriorate.

Following initial assessments, the Government has extended the most affected area to include Makawanpur and Sindhuli districts, in addition to Bhaktapur, Dhading, Dolakha, Gorkha, Kathmandu, Lalitpur, Lamjung, Rasuwa, Ramechhap, Nuwakot, and Sindulpalchowk.
The United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) teams have traveled to Dhading and Gorkha, where the team has set-up a humanitarian hub for the area. On 2 May, another team is scheduled to arrive in Sindulpachowk District.
In Gorkha, the UNDAC team has found that there is a dire need for shelter, particularly tents and blankets. Access to some remote villages remains a key challenge as many landing zones are unsafe due to debris, altitude and current weather conditions. Road access is limited. Some remote villages can only be accessed by helicopters.

Many people continue to sleep in the open due to fear of aftershock and many more have lost their homes in the earthquake, particularly in Gorkha and Nuwakot. The local weather bureau has forecasted unusually heavy rain for the coming days. This will place additional strain on the people who have already lost family members and friends, as well as much of their belongings.
The Kathmandu Airport remains open for 24 hours. However, limited landing slots and the prioritization of movements of in-country air assets continue to delay the arrival of relief goods from abroad. Furthermore, humanitarian partners have reported that taxes are increasing and competition for transport of relief goods is expanding.
In some of the most affected areas, there have been unconfirmed reports of looting of relief goods. In addition, mentions regarding distributions of relief goods not reaching all members of the affected community in an equitable manner began to circulate in social and mainstream media. Vulnerable and marginalized groups risk further exclusion by not having access to critical life-saving assistance.

Update 08:59 UTC : Drone footage shot by CNN shows villages in Nepal in need of aid, but are unreachable due to landslides.

Update 08:56 UTC : Effect.org flies drone over the historical Baktapur to reveal just how dire the situation is. As shown, the area has been completely destroyed by the earthquake. Water and medical supplies are running short and concerns of a cholera outbreak are high

Update 08:23 UTC : A number of very interesting MapAction maps who use the Open Maps system to help Aid organizations. Click on the map below twatch it in full PDF size.

Update 07:43 UTC : Some people are still searching for friends and relatives who were in Nepal at the time of the earthquake. The Nepal government has disclosed a list from those who were already registered. A lot are still unaccounted for (missing). The people behind Earthquake-report.com do send their sincere condolences to all those affected by this tragedy, not only the friends and families of the unfortunate on this list, but also to the thousands of Nepali, Indian, Bangladesh and Tibetan families. Clicking on the images will make them a little bit bigger. The list can also be watched in PDF
We publish this list because we get regular requests of people searching for loved ones.

Update 07:28 UTC : As could be expected after 1 week, the Nepal Government has declared that there in no longer a chance to find living people under the debris which translated means that they will give up Search and Rescue missions. After the GOLDEN 72 hours, the chance of finding people alive is decreasing gradually and only some miracles tend to happen. Luckily Nepal proved that many miracles did happen with the biggest one the baby who is now in great health with his mother again. He will carry a great story in his future life :)

Update 06:05 UTC : A new relatively strong aftershock (M5) happened in the mainshock area and was felt all over Nepal. We expect this aftershock to further damage houses and infrastructure who was already badly damaged in a radius of 30 km around the epicenter .

Update 23:04 UTC : A recount of what happened during the earthquake and afterwards by Gemma Hume :
Excerpt :
I had stayed on after going out to Nepal to do a workshop on energy access in order to take a couple of weeks holiday, and was due to fly out on Saturday afternoon. I was in Thamel (the backpacker/shopping part of Kathmandu) at midday when the earthquake struck.
As if the ground had turned to liquid
Have you have ever been on a cable bridge – where as someone else treads on it, it shakes? It was as if the whole world was like that – as if the ground had turned to liquid.
I was pretty scared. I was in a narrow street, I didn’t have a map and I didn’t know exactly where I was. People were crouching in doorways to take cover and as soon as the quake was over we all ran to the nearest open space.
It was a pretty frightening few minutes, and I immediately decided that I could do without any more pashminas or other gifts to take back with me, and headed straight back, out of Thamel’s narrow streets, to the hotel I’d been staying in on Durbar Marg.
On the way back to the hotel I saw a few walls and some electricity poles fallen into the road, and a couple of people with minor injuries, but nothing which gave me any idea of the real scale of destruction.

Update 22:35 UTC : We received the following message from Andrew Becker :
I am writing to let you know that there are currently independent relief efforts being led to the village of Chaukati in Sindhupalchowk region in Nepal. If you could spread that message, letting people know that it’s being covered and to spread out relief efforts to the many other places that still need it, that would be greatly appreciated.

Update 16:39 UTC : An interesting article in the Nepal Times about the seismologist responsible for the Nepal Seismological Center
Excerpt :
After checking if his children and wife were safe, he jumped on his cousin’s bike heading to Lainchaur. “Duty first,” he says. “I could have monitored the earthquake from home, but the network wasn’t working.”
The chief of National Seismological Centre was soon joined by the seismologists, Umesh Gautam, Ratnamani Gupta and Bharat Koirala, as well as the system engineer, Eric Sauvage. Later, the deputy director general of Department of Mines and Geology completed the team.
The National Seismological Centre had a difficult time after the first earthquake. One of the two computers was down. The signals received at the laboratory were saturated, so the magnitude couldn’t be determined. “We had to wait for Surkhet’s centre to send the data,” says Adhikari. They received it right before the 6.6 aftershock.

Update 15:03 UTC : 260,000 Children homeless in Nepal (Save the Children)
One week on from the deadly earthquake in Nepal, Save the Children warns that more than a quarter of a million children whose homes were destroyed face months living outside in harsh conditions.
The charity is warning that in the most remote mountainous regions, only reachable currently by helicopter, children and babies are sleeping outdoors without any protection from the cold night time temperatures and heavy rainfall.
In more accessible areas tarpaulins, blankets and baby kits have been distributed in temporary displacement camps, but children remain vulnerable to disease from the cold and unsanitary conditions they are living in.
Kesang, a first time mother speaking from the maternity ward, said she was terrified of taking her new born baby back to sleep outside. “We only have a plastic sheet to cover us and the ground easily becomes flooded – we have to stay standing all night. Disease spreads easily in these conditions, I’m really worried that my baby and I will get sick.”
Parents sleeping outside are reporting fevers, outbreaks of diarrhoea and the risk of pneumonia. There is also a serious risk from asbestos – many homes and offices in Nepal were built using asbestos and the earthquake has exposed it.
Sarah Ireland, Save the Children’s Humanitarian Advocacy Manager in Nepal, said: “A week on from the earthquake, the full scale of the devastation is just becoming clear. Many of these 260,000 children have lost everything – their homes, their warm clothes and tragically sometimes their families.”
“The risk of disease outbreaks and exposure are very real, especially for young children. That is why we are moving fast to get hygiene kits, tarpaulins and warm children’s sleeping bags out to everyone who needs them.”
Save the Children has distributed much of its existing in-country emergency relief stock, reaching thousands of people with shelter kits, baby clothes, cooking utensils and more. Three planes and several trucks have been loaded with more supplies in India, Dubai and Philippines and have begun to arrive in Nepal.
The organization is also now setting up Child Friendly Spaces for children to play and be safe in the displacement camps that have sprung up across the affected areas.

Update 12:18 UTC : 1,000 Europeans are missing, 12 confirmed dead following a statement of the EU ambassador

Important Update 10:56 UTC : EKantipur wrote a little earlier the following :
Keep in mind that only a few Nepali people do trust the government as widespread corruption is part of daily life in Nepal.

Nepal Government to take all bank deposits meant for disaster relief

The Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) issued a circular to A, B and C class banks in the country on Thursday afternoon stating that all the amount deposited in them for the purpose of relief for Saturday’s Great Quake will be automatically transferred to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
“Due to the disaster caused by the Great Quake, all the accounts opened in banks and financial institutions by different organizations for collecting donations will be earmarked and the amount in them will be transferred to the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund,” read the circular.
The NRB has cited the powers conferred to it by section 79 of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2002 for issuing the circular.
The central bank has also asked the financial institutions to send daily reports of total deposits in those accounts.
Onlinekhabar reported that Finance Minister Ram Saran Mahat brought the proposal at Thursday’s cabinet meeting.

Nepal and corruption

Nepal has slipped ten places on the Corruption Perception Index (CPI) of Transparency Inter-national, earning a dubious distinction as one of the most corrupt states in the world.
The annual survey by the Berlin-based watchdog has placed Nepal in 126th position with a score of 29 among 175 countries. It was placed 116th on the index among 176 countries last year. The CPI measures the extent of corruption within a country on a scale ranging from zero to 100. Countries securing higher scores are rated as the least corrupt and those with low scores are perceived to the most corrupt.
According to the TI, countries that score below 50 are perceived as highly corrupt and those that secure 100 are cleanest. Except Bhutan all South Asian countries secured scores below 50, with Afghanistan ranked the most corrupt country in the region. Bhutan is the least corrupt in the region with a score of 65, followed by India (38); Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh (29) and Afghanistan (12).

Update : ER expects a lot of fatalities. How many : too soon to make an estimate. Massive landslides alone can count for many. At least one good thing : the earthquake happened during daylight and in the Nepali spring = less victims

A cruel earthquake happened in the pre-Himalaya ranges of Nepal just in between Kathmandu and Pokara. We expected a lot of devastation and massive landslides
