Women's March : we march for America's future
Many men and women from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities will join together in Washington on January 21 to honor American values of inclusiveness, concern for the most vulnerable amongst us, belief in the role of citizens working through their democratic government in addressing the problems we face in the 21st century from climate change to increasing inequality, from lack of infrastructure to lack of educational opportunities, from the continuing harm of old and often hateful views about gender and color to the inspiring evidence that a growing majority in this country wants to move towards a more inclusive, respectful, progressive society.
That this occurs on the day after the inauguration of the most disliked president-elect in the nation's history– a man who lost the popular election by 2.8 million votes but won the presidency through the antiquated mechanism of an unrepresentative electoral college that was established to assist slaveholding states and operates today to deny the vote to anyone who voted for his opponent in states that award the entire state pot of votes to a person who may have won by a minuscule percentage (as, for instance, did Michigan in this election), a man who was born into wealth but who (wrongly) thinks of himself as being self-made, a man who has consistently mistaken his ability to fund endless litigation to deny workers their rightful pay and his incessant bullying of workers and contractors in his business world with successful business negotiation skills, a man who lies more often than he speaks truth, a man who has reveled in male chauvinism, narcissism, bigotry, and anti-feminism–is no coincidence.
We march to champion inclusiveness. We march to protest bullies in power who equate their historic privilege–whether from birth to wealth or merely birth to the 'right' skin color or the 'right' set of social connections–with a continuing right to dominate others who have struggled against less favorable circumstances. We march for social justice. We march for democracy. We march for the American future.
