We thought that a detente had been reached with AG Sessions on the pot issue. We thought we had all agreed that there are probably more important things for the Department of Justice on which to focus than on legal weed. Lord knows there are.
It seems to us that marijuana is clearly a state issue per the Constitution. It would appear to fall solidly under the 10th Amendment. (As should any number of issues.) As a presumed fan of federalism and smaller government Mr. Sessions, state regulation of cannabis seems the lawful and morally correct choice.
Again, if Trump wants to blow up the libertarian coalition that helped him win the White House he can let Mr. Sessions continue to pursue this route, which would be a crying shame.
Mr. Sessions, the moral thing is to leave people alone and for the DOJ to pursue constitutional policies. The Drug War on so many levels makes a mockery of our Constitution. It is also deeply crony and benefits drug cartels, pharma, and other government embedded special interests.
We believe that you are wrong on this issue Attorney General Sessions, very much so. And we say this respectfully.
It’s not a matter of fashion. The drug war is immoral. Pot is not.
(From The Daily Caller)
In remarks before law enforcement officials in Richmond, Va. Wednesday, Sessions said that smoking marijuana is “only slightly less awful” than using heroin.
“I realize this may be an unfashionable belief in a time of growing tolerance of drug use. But too many lives are at stake to worry about being fashionable. I reject the idea that America will be a better place if marijuana is sold in every corner store,” the attorney general said. “And I am astonished to hear people suggest that we can solve our heroin crisis by legalizing marijuana – so people can trade one life-wrecking dependency for another that’s only slightly less awful. Our nation needs to say clearly once again that using drugs will destroy your life.”
“Our nation” is supposed to be “the land of the free.”
