Will Drought Nudge Farmers to Diversify Away From Corn?
Today’s NY Times features a very good OP-ED by Prof. William Moseley. He is an optimist in the sense that he believes that self interested farmers will “wake up” as they realize that climate change is real and will take pro-active steps to change their game and this will lead to a more diversified food supply. He blames government for introducing pro-corn incentives that reduce overall food supply diversification. This theme of the unintended consequences of government action for climate change adaptation will only grow in importance over time. Like me, Moseley has some faith in individual self interested actors making “good decisions” that aggregate to have overall social benefits. For some of my thoughts on such issues watch this.
