The beta, or preview, release of EMSI’s 2012.3 dataset is now available to subscribers of our web-based tools. This update reflects new data from many of our most important sources, as well as changes to our final occupation classification system (EMSI SOC codes). You may need to create new saved occupation groups to account for changes in occupation codes.
Updated Data Sources in This Release
New Occupation Classification
In this release, EMSI has changed its final occupation codes to align with OES 2010 and 2011. These codes are a transitional system between the official classifications of SOC 2000 and SOC 2010. The table in the PDF version of our release notes (see here) shows the new codes and corresponding old codes.
The exact relationship between old and new codes varies. Some occupations merely had a change of code or title but have the same content; others are groups of SOC 2010 codes; some others are made from subsets of SOC 2000 occupations which carry over into the new system. For example, only a small number of Electricians and Roofers (those who install solar panels) are now classified as “47-4799: Construction and Related Workers, All Other”, since this transitional occupation includes the final SOC 2010 occupation “47-2230: Solar Photovoltaic Installers.” The vast majority of Electricians and Roofers will remain classified in their previous occupation.
For more information on the occupation coding transition, see www.bls.gov/soc and http://www.bls.gov/oes/oes_ques.htm#Ques41.
QCEW and NAICS 2012
QCEW 2011 (and CES) data are published in NAICS 2012 codes. EMSI currently converts QCEW 2011 back to NAICS 2007 codes. When more data are available in NAICS 2012 (probably by early 2013), EMSI will begin releasing all industry data in NAICS 2012.
