Introduced on November 15, and referred to a committee, “A bill to prohibit and deter the theft of metal, and for other purposes” (S. 3631) was put forward by (D-MN) Amy Klobuchar. It can be cited as the “Metal Theft Prevention Act of 2012,” and is aimed at preventing government property from theft, especially if it contains metal. The bill does not only target thieves, but also any-and-all small business that operate in the metals industry. For any transaction over just $100, the merchant is required to write a check (no cash) or risk facing an up to $10,000 penalty.
