[Ed. note: For those of you invested in Randgold, your future just got a lot shinier.]
Developing a mega gold orebody in a very remote area of Africa is no easy task, but Randgold Resources is making great progress at Kibali in the northeastern DRC.
by Lawrence Williams, MineWeb.com
Despite the dissident activity in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s north-east, which recently led to a major city, Goma, falling into rebel hands, Randgold Resources, the developer of the major Kibali gold mine in the region reports the arrival on site of two giant ball mills which are the biggest single items for the mine’s 7 million tonne/year concentrator. The mills were shipped from Antwerp in Belgium to Mombasa in Kenya, and then needed to be transported across the heart of Africa – a major logistical exercise which took 6 weeks. They have now arrived at the mine site at Doko in northeast DRC, a trip over limited road infrastructure of 1,800 km – a process which took six weeks.
The 7 MW mills were each transported in three massive sections. Each mill weighs 170 tonnes and is 9.5 metres long and 6.1 metres in diameter and when installed will be capable of milling a combined 7.2 million tonnes a year.
