The Market Ticker – Apples Sales Numbers: NOT What They Appear

(Before It's News)

You've seen the headline by now:

“Apple sells 9 million iPhones in first weekend, a massive beat and record.”

Except that they really didn't.

Unlike some companies, however, you can't blame Apple for the deception.  They are simply reporting sales the same way every other cell phone maker does — by sell-in to their dealers.

But — in every other release their dealers sold out of stock — therefore, sell-in was the same as sell-through.

Not this time.  This time the estimated sell-through was only 5 million.  The rest built inventory, almost all of it in the 5c, which leaves one to wonder if that is going to be an utter iFail.

So no, there was no “record” uptake for the new iPhone.  At all.

But there sure was a record amount of hype for the iFanbois.
