The game of chess has roots going back to 600 A.D.. Although brought to Europe by Persian traders, the origin of the game lies in an Indian war game called Chaturanga developed during the Gupta Empire.
The game we play would be familiar to those playing Chaturanga centuries ago. The king, pawn (foot soldier) and knight (horse) pieces remain the same. However, the bishop began as an elephant and the rook was a chariot, all reflecting the tools of warfare at the time. We know the rook today as the castle piece. The modern queen is interesting.
