Officials representing the U.S. Embassy Syria Twitter account accused the Syrian government of aiding ISIS in the takeover of Aleppo this week, a major shift in narrative following the publication of declassified Pentagon documents showing clear Western support for jihadist elements in the country. According to embassy representatives, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has not only avoided engaging ISIS targets, but has actively attempted to “bolster their position.”
“Coalition partners noted the continued deterioration of the situation in Syria and the inability/unwillingness of the Assad regime to fight ISIL,” the group said.
The embassy asserts that coalition members are currently looking into how the Syrian government has aided the jihadist’s expansion in the region, an absurd claim given undeniable evidence pointing to the West’s direct involvement in the terror group’s growth.
