[...] Last week’s GOP presidential “debate” was more interesting than expected. While Donald Trump certainly enlivened the event, the night’s most substantive discussion was the Chris Christie – Rand Paul exchange on warrantless National Security Agency surveillance.
The dialogue exposed two different rhetorical styles as well as different opinions. Christie immediately launched into the familiar, emotional “whatever-it-takes-to-keep-us-safe” boilerplate that surveillance defenders deploy whenever asked about civil liberties.
Rand Paul stood on constitutional principle, correctly citing the Fourth Amendment, but missed a chance to point out that there is no evidence NSA surveillance busted any terror plots. Several congressional committees have looked for such cases; they found informants and other low-tech tools captured as the few examples NSA defenders can cite.
