President Obama will deliver an “urgent” address to the nation at 8 PM this evening on gun control.
Oval Office addresses are relatively rare. Obama has delivered three during his two terms. The addresses are usually reserved for major events of national or international significance.
A Facebook post indicates the address will center on terrorism.
CBS News, however, contradicts this by stating the address will deal with gun control.
Following the San Bernardino shooting last week it was predicted Obama would invoke executive authority to close down the so-called “gun show loophole” and also move to control the sale of firearms on the internet.
The supposed gun show loophole is legal under the Firearm Owners Protection Act of 1986. The law states individuals “not engaged in the business” of selling firearms are not required to conduct background checks on buyers or maintain records of sale.
Following Sandy Hook Democrats targeted the law and Obama said “old assumptions” about the Second Amendment were in transition.
Democrats pushed hard to pass a budget measure last week containing a provision introduced by notorious gun-grabber Sen. Dianne Feinstein. The provision would have shut down the Second Amendment for people on the federal government’s secret and highly flawed “no-fly” list. Procedural votes along party lines blocked the proposal.
