Verlee Washington hadn’t been in school in 20 years, but she’d always been interested in computers and IT. So she decided to invest in herself, as she put it, by enrolling at Scott Community College, part of the Eastern Iowa Community College District.
Washington, a 40-year-old who holds two part-time jobs, is now on the way to a degree in information technology. And she’s using Career Coach, Emsi’s online career exploration tool, to see which IT-related jobs are available and how much she can expect to make.WQAD, a TV station that covers the Quad Cities, featured Washington and her use of Career Coach last week in a news segment (see video below).Eastern Iowa Community Colleges (Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott) provide a customized Career Coach to their students and anyone interested in a job in the region. It features data for eastern Iowa and western Illinois on wages, employment, and job postings. And it ties all of the EICC’s programs to those jobs so Career Coach users can visualize a career and education path.“I like it because it [shows] a career path,” said Lori Walljasper, the chair of EICC’s information technology department. “I can decide what education I need. I can look at what jobs are available.”For more on Eastern Iowa Community Colleges and Career Coach, read their press release and watch their video.
