from CNSnews:

At the Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing on Wednesday, Sen. Dick Durban (D.-Ill.) asked Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch about a principle Gorsuch argued for in a book he published in 2006 in opposition to assisted suicide and euthanasia.

The principle: “The intentional taking of human life by private persons is always wrong.”

Durbin asked him: “How could you square that with legal abortion?”

Here is the exchange:

Sen. Dick Durbin (D.-Ill.): I guess what I’m driving at is this; there is a statement which you made in that book which has been often quoted and I’d want to make sure that I quote it accurately here today. Give me just a moment to make sure I find it. It relates to the taking of life.

Judge Neil Gorsuch: “I believe so.”

Durbin: “I believe so too. How could you square that statement with legal abortion?”

Gorsuch: “Senator, the book explains the Supreme Court of the United States has held in Roe vs. Wade that a fetus is not a person for purposes of the 14th Amendment. And the book explains that.

Durbin: Do you accept that?
