UN Commission: States have a “Duty Not to Aid or Assist” Israeli “Apartheid Regime”

(Before It's News)

A UN commission has found “overwhelming evidence” that Israel is an “apartheid regime” which uses force and violence to “oppresses” and “dominate” the Palestinian people as a whole for purposes of “racial” and “demographic engineering”.  (Likewise, in 2009, “a comprehensive report by the Human Rights Research Council of South Africa found that Israeli practices in the occupied Palestinian territory were overwhelmingly consistent with apartheid”.)

The UN commission “urges swift action to oppose and end” Israeli apartheid, including though support of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, and through an international tribunal to address the question of apartheid.

The report notes South African apartheid was ended through similar means (though its demise is also largely attributed to Cuban anti-colonial military intervention).  The US government was the last holdout supporting the South African apartheid regime, as it massacred millions to try to sustain itself.

Dr. Gerald Horne and other scholars have pointed out the South African apartheid regime was the ideological offspring of the United States.  Likewise, many Israeli fundamentalist settlers come from the US, itself a colonial settler state historian W. Hixson finds is the “most militarized nation in world history”.

Scholars point to this connection as one of the numerous reasons the US so strongly supports Israel, with a more dominant reason being its usefulness as a proxy colony in the resource-rich Middle East.  However, the Soviet Union and Britain, not the United States, supported Israel’s founding, which consisted of massacres and an ethnic cleansing of nearly a million people.

The US began marked support for Israel in 1967, when Israel annexed territory beyond its legal borders and inflicted a defeat on Egypt’s president Gamal Nasser, who had earned the ire of the US by overthrowing the Egyptian monarchy and introducing egalitarian resource policies.

Today, Israel, a rich country, is the single biggest recipient of US aid as it continues to massacre and ethnically cleanse people and annex and settle territory outside its borders, acting, the UN commission notes, as a destabilizing force in the region.

While the UN general assembly votes overwhelmingly every year (usually about 160 to 170 of the 193 member states) to condemn Israel’s occupations and settlements (which have been ruled illegal by the most authoritative international bodies), the US and about five to seven other nations, including tiny US dependencies such as Micronesia and Palau, continue to veto the resolution and support the occupation, annexations, and what the UN commission and others have determined is a case of apartheid.

The UN commission report concludes with a note of urgency:

States have a separate and collective duty (a) not to recognize an apartheid
regime as lawful; (b) not to aid or assist a State in maintaining an apartheid
regime; and (c) to cooperate with the United Nations and other States in bringing
apartheid regimes to an end. A State that fails to fulfil those duties could itself be
held legally responsible for engaging in wrongful acts involving complicity with
maintaining an apartheid regime. The United Nations and its agencies, and all
Member States, have a legal obligation to act within their capabilities to prevent
and punish instances of apartheid that are responsibly brought to their attention.

In the case of Israel-Palestine, any delay compounds the crime by prolonging the
subjugation of Palestinians to the active practice of apartheid by Israel. Prompt
action is accordingly imperative to avert further human suffering and end a crime
against humanity that is being committed now.
