Former Department Store Converted into 70,000 Square Foot Classroom Building
(Fayetteville & Mount Airy, N.C.) Reliable high-performance construction leader John S Clark Company, LLC (JS Clark) has successfully completed a unique retrofitting project for Fayetteville Technical Community College, converting a former department store into over 70,000 square feet of educational and office space.
The newly revamped two-story facility, called the General Classroom Building, will house classrooms and computer labs and provide homes for the college bookstore and campus security.

The General Classroom Building started as a former department store adjacent to the campus of Fayetteville Technical Community College, which purchased the structure. It was gutted completely inside and out, then modified to meet the college’s requirements for the new facility. The building was built back completely around the existing structure with all new mechanical, electrical and plumbing.
“A cool feature of the building is that is utilizes a rainwater collection system to provide water for the toilets and urinals,” said JS Clark Project Manager Craig Spivey.
The unique specifications of the General Classroom Building project provided an opportunity for JS Clark’s dedicated construction experts to utilize their wide range of experience and expertise in addressing challenges of working within an existing building structure while implementing the architectural plans and design.
Fayetteville Technical Community College is one of 58 institutions in the North Carolina Community College System. The college was established in 1961 and serves over 40,000 students annually by providing over 150 occupational, technical, general education, college transfer, and continuing education programs to meet students’ needs and desires as well as the community.
During 2012, JS Clark will have completed over $100 million of projects related to education in North Carolina.
