When working on a construction site, many dangers may befall you. Construction workers are in constant danger of some accident happening to them and their lives are on the line all the time during their working hours. These accidents, although they cannot be completely rooted out, can be in most cases prevented from happening. There are literally tons of safety methods that are supposed to help prevent any injuries from happening at the workplace. These methods and regulations are proposed by the Occupational Health & Safety Administration and they include many ways to ensure that the construction workers are safe. One of the most important aspects of workplace safety is the protective equipment designed to directly protect workers from dangers on the construction site.
Head protection
The most common causes of head injuries are flying debris, falling objects and hitting some fixed hard object with the head. Since the head is the most essential part of the human body, it is only natural that it should be strived to protect the head by any means possible. The best way to protect the head is to wear a protective helmet, or a hard hat. These are designed to absorb any force that may have an impact on the head of the wearer, thus protecting him or her from any head trauma that might be caused by the force of impact. Many hard hats also come with a face shield, which is there to protect the wearer from splashing liquids and shards that might find a way to the wearers face.
Gloves
Nowadays, there are a great number of glove types to choose from. It all depends on the type of work that needs to be done. For example, when working with chemicals, latex gloves might be the best choice, as they offer chemical protection and they are light and flexible. When working in a metal industry, hard and heavy gloves will be the most effective choice. The safety industry is constantly working on new ways to make protective gloves, as to insure maximum flexibility with maximum protection.
Skin protection
Protecting the skin is also one of the major concerns for workers who operate with hazardous materials, chemicals and materials that can send flying splinters. There is a wide range of skin protection equipment available. When working with biologically hazardous materials, it is always recommended to use the full-body protection suit. Suits made from waterproof and chemical-resistant materials are suitable when working with potentially dangerous chemicals which could splash around and hurt your skin. Heat-resistant Kevlar vests and suits are recommended when working with high heat, such as welding.
Eye protection
Eye protection is also essential when doing any kind of work on the construction site. People who work with welding should protect their eyes from sparks that occur, because they might burn the eye, and also, since the process of welding is very luminous, special colored lenses should be obtained as to prevent the cornea of the eye from burning, thus causing blindness. If the worker is wearing eyeglasses because of sight impairment, there are special goggles that go over the glasses to ensure full protection. Protecting the eyes from splashing acids and other chemicals is also much recommended, since these can greatly damage the eye, and, again, cause blindness.
Ear protection
Working on a construction site often means being surrounded by loud noises, cranks, buzzing and screeching of the machines that are being operated. These noises are usually constant and can cause significant hearing loss over time. This is why protecting the ears is also very important. This can be done by using several types of ear protection equipment that is available. Certain protective equipment resembles earmuffs, since they have a frame around the head. Others are made to fit the ear of the wearer from the inside and these protect the inner ear. There is also an option of having ear protection on the hard hat, if you like to combine two in one.
The personal protective equipment should be a necessity for anyone who is involved with construction working. Failure to adhere to the regulations that require each person to have protective equipment might lead to serious injuries and even death. It is the job of the employing company to provide the equipment in order to make sure that the workers are protected. If not, the company is liable to be sued in court for compensating any injury that might have been prevented by using personal protective gear.
