In this day and age of tough competition in the job market, colleges are also becoming choosy in order to maintain steady placement percentage throughout sessions. For this reason only, examinations have become harder nuts to crack for the students. Whether you study online or on-campus, getting good grades might not be a cakewalk for you. You need to honest about your studies, do a lot of research and stay abreast of what’s going on in your class and outside it. Playing hooky might instigate some amount of enthusiasm and mere fun, but that will surely muck up your future. So make no mistake and check out what your college exactly wants from you.

  1. Good grades: Your grades should reflect your honest efforts and should improve through semesters. Yes, your score graph may descend at times. But you should be consistent and should demonstrate an upward trend throughout. Colleges will recommend you to prospective employers based on your grades only. The higher it goes, the better job opportunity awaits you.
  2. Score well in standardized tests: This is basically required for getting admitted to colleges. You need to score considerably well in SAT or ACT. If you are an overseas student, you also need to score well in TOEFL and/or GRE. Some colleges do not consider these test scores whereas accredited colleges show no leniency in this regard.
  3. Depth of knowledge: You need not to be a ‘Jack of All Trades’. Rather, you are expected to be deeply knowledgeable in your subject area. If you are studying archeology, do visit online libraries, interview Subject Matter Experts, and do a lot of research to increase your knowledge on a specific subject. This is what colleges look for in their students.
  4. Involvement: Do not just be a passive learner. Take part in group learning activities. Colleges encourage these activities hugely and they expect their students to be active learners and contributors. Getting the whole picture is always a good idea. If required, serve internships in companies suggested by your college authority and gather enough hand-on knowledge.
  5. Stand out: Colleges do not like mediocrity. You need to become special in the eyes of your mentors and for that, need to put a lot of labor. Identify your SWOT (Strength, Weakness, Opportunities and Threats) and work on these areas. However, standing out from the crowd does not mean being slapdash about other students in your class. Learn and grow in a cooperative and collaborative learning environment.

And if somebody told you that online education is easy like anything, go tell him that best value colleges are aimed at producing great talents, and not mediocre ‘degree holders’ only.
