(Before It's News)

For the first time, a New Source Performance Standard (NSPS) for carbon pollution abatement has been proposed by the Obama administration and Environment Protection Agency (EPA) in the US. These standards combined with steps to cut other power plant pollutants will mark significant progress in the effort to protect human health, reduce waste, and encourage a clean energy economy in the US. These proposed regulations for air quality improvement are expected to have a significant impact on the economics of coal-fired power plants due to increased capital costs for installing emission control equipment such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS). Although the proposed NSPS will hinder the construction of new coal-fired plants due to the high cost of emission control equipment, it will further boost the trend for building new and cheaper natural gas plants to replace older and inefficient coal-fired generation capacity.

Scope

- Market prospects of carbon capture and clean energy resources for power generation in the US driven by new carbon pollution abatement rules
- New carbon emission control regualtions in the US posing a threat to the new-build coal-fired power plants
- Impact of stringent carbon emission control regulations leading to the adoption of carbon capture technologies
- Future market opportunity for other clean energy resources in view of reduced coal-fired power generation
