I Just Want To Hear You
Verity Gospel Music Group (Released September 4, 2012)
By Bob Marovich for The Black Gospel Blog
Deon Kipping the songwriter is also Deon Kipping the singer.
Released yesterday, I Just Want To Hear You, Kipping’s debut solo CD for Verity, is an opportunity for the larger gospel community to experience the “singer” portion of Kipping’s singer-songwriter resume
An ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Award winner for Marvin Sapp’s “Praise Him In Advance” and composer of JJ Hairston and Youthful Praise’s classic anthem, “Incredible God, Incredible Praise,” the Bridgeport, Connecticut-raised Kipping provides an album filled to the brim with inspirational tracks that range from pop and CCM to contemporary gospel, although they all orbit around P&W.  Kipping explained the album as “eclectic enough to keep you interested, but not so much that you don’t get it.  There really is something for everyone on this CD, because my musical influences are so broad.”
Well put.  “Heal Again,” a song about trusting in God’s recurrent rescue abilities, explodes with Journey-esque power-pop guitars.  The inspirational single, “What’s Coming Is Better,” evokes the work of VaShawn Mitchell, a songwriter and worship leader cut from the same mold as Kipping.  The delightful rock ballad, “So Addicted,” is about fleeing from harmful addictions to a God addiction, where “I don’t need to go to rehab or a twelve-step program….my supplier supplies for free.”
The passionate “Let Your Power Fall” is the thematic flip side of “Heal Again,” in which Kipping asks God to “prove the doubt is wrong/you’re still mighty and strong.”  It also offers some of his most inspired gospel singing.  Other tracks, such as “I Don’t Look Like (What I’ve Been Through)” “Miracle,” and “Destiny Is Waiting” are more certain of celestial deliverance.  Meanwhile, the title track and “I Need Your Attention,” the latter a gentle duet with Anaysha Figueroa-Cooper, are intimate prayer-conversations with God about surviving seemingly insurmountable pressures.
A extraordinarily professional band of musicians and background vocalists support the artist flawlessly.  It is the kind of perfection one expects from a Verity title.
The talented Deon Kipping has a story to share on I Just Want To Hear You, but he certainly doesn’t sound like what he’s been through.  Far from being a “…and then I wrote,” the album packs a confident spiritual wallop.
Four of Five Stars
Picks: “What’s Coming Is Better,” “I Don’t Look Like (What I’ve Been Through).”
