The clock tower scene in Back to the Future (1985) pays tribute to the iconic sequence in Harold Lloyd’s Safety Last! (1923), wherein Harold attempt’s to scale the side of a building, encountering perilous obstacles along the way, and ends up clinging to the hands of a clock.
Harold Lloyd is a recurring motif in the film, as the image of Harold dangling from the clock, (which became one of the most iconic images from the silent era), can be seen in the opening sequence amongst Doc Brown’s clocks.
