Metal Slug 3 is a retro gaming port that has found its way to Android- most probably after the success of the original Metal Slug game on the platform. Metal Slug 3 is scrolling 2D shooting game that sees your characters fight a wide range of aggressive enemies as you rescue hostages and destroy everything in your path. Expect earth-shatteringly frenetic gameplay, more weapons than ever before and a diverse range of bizarre enemies. If you like your games explosive, frantic and slightly crazy, definitely check this out.
Price: $1.99
Content Rating: Medium Maturity
Pros & Cons:
Pros
Fantastic retro graphics!
Awesome sound and music!
Exhilarating gameplay!
More weapons and enemies than you can throw a grenade at!
Cons
Limited continues seem a little miserly.
Features:
Remember Metal Slug 3? Well it’s now on Android. Here’s a true arcade classic that sees you blasting your way through all manner of baddies, from basic soldiers to bees, zombies and helicopters. The action is non-stop and extremely full-on from the word go. Enemies really go for you and you have to make use of the arsenal of weapons the game thankfully throws at you. As you proceed you rescue various hostages and collect various other items to help your warpath.
The graphics are those brilliant 16-bit old school type where so many gaming memories stem from. It’s pure, characterized 2D with big explosions, cute little details and smooth animations. It gives a genuine arcade feel with even an ‘Insert Coin’ notification where a second player could join the action on an arcade cabinet. There is a cooperative mode where someone can join you via a Bluetooth connection although I haven’t been able to try this. Thrilling sound and effects are also thrown into the mix which makes the whole experience an immersive and nail-biting extravaganza of unstoppable action. I often found myself holding my breath as the battles ramped up so it’s definitely one of the most engrossing games you can play on Android.
There are more weapons than I can list here, seemingly every level introduces new and destructive toys for blowing everything to smithereens. It’s a good thing that there are quite so many enemies to destroy! They really come at you too, just an incessant charge of foes- which makes everything so incredibly frantic. You just about get time to take a breather at the end of each level- just enough to pat yourself on the back and get ready for the next onslaught.
A small negative I noted was the limited number of continues in the game. Like all those old retro games you get a 10 second countdown when you run out of lives (it was there to encourage you to insert a coin for just one more go) and you sadly only get a few of these before the game is over and you have to begin again. I felt this was a little stingy as this is a game you pay for outright after all. This will hamper progress somewhat as you have to be move-perfect to survive long enough to complete the game, I hope this gets updated because it really diminishes the potential of an otherwise excellent game.
Fun Factor:
With gameplay so incessant, it’s only when you end a level where you realize just what a rush playing Metal Slug 3 is. It’s loads of fun and nostalgic gameplay, staggering graphics and relentless sound combine to create an excellent touchscreen title.
Addictive:
The moment you die for the first time, there is no question you’ll hit that continue button. The game is highly addictive and, although you only have limited continues in the game, you’ll try again I’m sure.
Graphics:
The visuals have been very faithfully ported from the original arcade game. Very retro but diverse and full of cool details and animations.
Accelerometer, Vibration & Sound:
Metal Slug 3 is chock full of sound effects and thumping music, again it has clearly all been lifted from the original game.
