In 1992 the game Doom revolutionized the gaming industry by being the initial first person shooter game. Instantly the game was a huge success, selling over 2,000,000 copies. It basically launched a new part of the industry and now we have tens of millions of people that play shooting games every single day. There is no way to deny the fact that this is a hugely popular game niche. Billions of dollars in sales are generated every year thanks to these games. Why is that? Some reasons that could be mentioned are listed below.
Creating An Absorbing Experience
A video game relies on decision making. The FPS game will force players to make decisions in really short periods of time. A simple decision actually becomes really attractive since it has to be done in under a second. As technology advancements happen and the games evolve, this decision making is actually sped up. What we can now play is so much faster than the original Doom game.
The Shooting Element
Flow is also created because of the shooting included in the game. It is a deviation from what we do every single day. It is hard to argue with the fact that shooting weapons and the military aspect is something that is compelling for most of the gamers. It is not because people want to be violent. This happens as there are many emotions that are pent-up and various impulses that have to be vented. Adrenaline is something that most people miss in their lives so the shooting aspect solves that.
The Control Element
According to many psychologists, control may very well be the most important aspect that makes the first person shooter so attractive. We all want to be happy and the only real way to do this is to control our life. According to the natural survival instincts we have, control is a biological necessity. We feel better when we feel we are in control. When we cannot control various aspects in our lives, we end up feeling helpless. Due to this, being able to control the outcome of the game and winning in a FPS shooter will help to get more control.
Graphics
When looking at the first person shooter, it is hard not to think about the visual element. The original Doom game did not have impressive graphics. This is quite obvious. New games now are much more different. The graphics are sometimes lifelike, which is something that makes it really difficult to realize if people play a game or not. Modern FPS games, especially those launched after 2015 simply look lifelike. The attraction towards something like this is really easy to understand.
On the whole, although the popularity of FPS games is a little lower than it used to be, due to the many other options available in the video game industry, we have to see these games as being among the most addictive because of what was written above. That is surely not going to change.
