During a volcanic eruption, lavatephra (ashlapillivolcanic bombs and blocks), and various gases are expelled from a volcanic vent or fissure. Several types of volcanic eruptions have been distinguished by volcanologists. These are often named after famous volcanoes where that type of behavior has been observed. Some volcanoes may exhibit only one characteristic type of eruption during a period of activity, while others may display an entire sequence of types all in one eruptive series.

Explosive eruption coming from Russia’s Tolbachik volcano

An explosive volcanic eruption from Plosky Tolbachik in Russia began to occur yesterday. Tolbachick has not seen an eruption in over 35 years.

 

In an alert notice issued on Nov. 27, the alert level for Tolbachik volcano, located on the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, was raisedfrom Green to Yellow. Now the level has been raised again as the volcano becomes more active.

 

As of Nov. 28, the alert level for the 3,085-meter (10,121 feet) volcano is now designated to Orange, according to KVERT (Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team).
