Recent Natural Disasters

• Superstorm Sandy in America
  -Superstorm Sandy killed at least 18 in America. Sandy also killed 69 people in the Caribbean.
  -Storm made landfall in New Jersey on Monday evening. New York was among the hardest hit.
  -The America storm caused the worst damage in the 108-year history of New York’s subway system.
  -President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in New York and Long Island. More than 670,000 customers are without power in and around New York City.
  -New York University’s Tisch Hospital was forced to evacuate 200 patients after its backup generator failed. Tunnels and bridges to Manhattan were shut down.

• M 5.2 moderate earthquake Off East Coast of the North Island, New Zealand (@ 68 km depth) 40 km ENE of Opotiki. Light to weak shaking will ave felt by the people of Whakatane, Gisborne and Rotorua.
  13:12 UTC (local time Wednesday, October 31, 2012 at 01:12 AM @ epicenter)
• M 6.2 very strong aftershock in Queen Charlotte Islands Region (@ 10 km depth) with epicenter located 189 km S of Masset (Canada). Just a weak shaking of MMI II-III will have felt by the people of Prince Rupert and Terrace.

Ongoing Major River Floods (Based on Satellite observation): Afghanistan (Amu Darya), Argentina, Australia (Murray and Darling), Brazil (Tocantins and Ana Doce Ponte Nova), Chad (N Djamena), China (Mekong, Xi Jiang and Huang He), Colombia (Japura), Democratic Republic of the Congo (Lualaba), Ethiopia, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iraq (Tigris), Japan, Malaysia, Nigeria (Niger and Benue), Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Philippines, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan (White Nile and Blue Nile), Tajikistan, United States (Mississippi) and Venezuela (Orinoco).

• Flooding in Sri Lanka
  -Heavy rains and strong winds caused flooding in the Northern, North Eastern and North Central Provinces of Sri Lanka.
  -Evacuation order was issued along the coast from Batticaloa to Jaffna which was later on lifted after cyclone “Nilam” changed its path towards the south Indian coast of Tamil Nadu.
  -Following local meteorological department, deep depression in the Bay of Bengal had caused the cyclone, with wind speeds of up to 80 kilometres (50 miles) an hour.
  Update
  According to Sri Lanka’s Disaster Management Center flood displaced around 4,627 people across the island nation. Two people were killed and 1,000 houses were destroyed.

• Post-Tropical Cyclone Sandy
  -As of 09:00 UTC, Sandy was located 24 km E of York Pennsylvania and 145 km W of Philadelphia Pennsylvania.
• Tropical Storm Rosa
  -As of 09:00 UTC, Rosa was located 1165 km SW of Cabo San Lucas Mexico.
  -Rosa is moving toward the west-northwest near 7 mph. No threat to land.

Natural Disaster News

• Snow storm in Virginia, USA
  -Superstorm Sandy caused snow storm reported in parts of West Virginia.
  -At least 236,000 customers were without power in West Virginia.
  -The roofs of at least three homes collapsed under the weight of heavy snow.
  
• Cyclone in India
  -Cyclonic storm is expected to cross the coast between Nagapattinam in Tamil Nadu and Nellore in Andhra Pradesh tomorrow. Cyclone ‘Nilam’, as suggested by Pakistan will bring heavy to very heavy rainfall over coastal Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Click for detail report on Cyclone Nilam.
