Having grown up in Oregon during my younger years, my soul resonates with the culture and ecology of the area. The Oregon air feels fresher and cleaner than Houston, for certain. Ahhh, oxygen! All the rain creates a verdant and lush vegetation in the belt that runs from the Cascade mountain range down the state. Nowhere is the fresh air and verdant greenery more pronounced than the temperate coastal rainforest that cloaks the coastline. The rainforest runs right to the sea in many places, with areas of sandy beach, rocky coastline with tidepools, vertical cliff edges, and even volcanic lava flows reminiscent of Hawaii or the Galapagos Islands.
Last spring I went to the Central Oregon Coast, as a guest of the Central Oregon Coast Association, and it was absolutely incredible! I have previously been to the north coast, particularly the famed Cannon Beach and Haystack Rock, but had never explored the Central Coast. It blew my mind and I knew I had to share it with my teenage kids — this is better than Disneyland. Not only is it a foodie haven, with everything from just-caught fresh seafood to unique coffeehouses and microbreweries to local, sustainable, vegan and vegetarian fare. Visit the Darkroom to see my photos from my visit from the south-Central region up north.
