By: Jay Coen Gilbert, Founder, B Corp
Sure you like Seventh Generation’s products – you’re a member of the Nation after all. But there’s another reason to be a fan – the company itself.
Seventh Generation has long been a leader, not just by creating “green” products, but by practicing a better way to do business. In 2008, the company joined the founding class of Certified B Corporations, a new type of company which uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. Now, four years later, they have reaffirmed their commitment to creating a positive impact and re-certified for the third time.
What exactly does this mean?
B Corp certification is to sustainable business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk. B Corps are certified by our nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency – so you know they’re a good company, not just good marketing.
To be a true leader, it’s not enough to have a great mission – you have to walk the talk. Seventh Generation, despite leadership changes and a difficult economy, has done just that. Over the years, the company has maintained a high Overall B Score, with a current score of 116, 38% higher than the average sustainable business. (You can view their full B Impact Report here: http://www.bcorporation.net/community/directory/seventhgeneration). And good practices lead to great results – since 1999, Seventh Generation has saved nearly 523,000 trees or 1.8 million barrels of oil.
