Sunrun, one of the largest home solar companies in the nation, is expanding its $0 upfront solar program to residents in the Long Island area. That’s great news for those in the region who are interested in going solar but not able or willing to take the plunge themselves.

Sunrun’s efforts to offer solar service to more homeowners was successful with the cooperation of the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), which opened doors to such solar service so that more homeowners could access clean power while supporting local jobs.

Long Island residents will be offered what is called third-party-owned solar, which is normally like a lease agreement. Sunrun owns the solar system and works with local partners to install it on a customer’s roof.

The homeowner will just pay a low rate for the power, while Sunrun monitors and maintains the system “for free” (i.e. for no additional charge). In some cases, the residents will be able to get solar with no upfront payment.

“LIPA’s decision supports consumer choice, makes solar more attainable for families of all incomes and demonstrates a strong commitment to job creation,” said Sunrun co-CEO Lynn Jurich. “Sunrun looks forward to a successful, cost-effective program for scaling equal access to home solar on Long Island.”

Previously, homeowners could only use LIPA incentives if they could afford to purchase a solar system for thousands of dollars. Now, those who choose solar service to eliminate high upfront costs can also participate in LIPA’s rebate program. Homeowners prefer solar service over cash purchase in the nation’s top solar markets.

“This opportunity helps further Governor Cuomo’s clean energy goals for New York while benefiting the local economy,” added Jurich of Sunrun.

The Long Island area suffered a lot damage from Hurricane Sandy — this may help generate some much-needed revenue for their economy. Programs that offer equal treatment for all home solar choices, third-party-owned and cash purchase, have a proven track record of success.

In California, solar service has brought over $1 billion to its economy, since Sunrun introduced it in 2007. So this may be a much-needed win-win situation for Long Island.
