Kuantan, Pekan and Rompin in Pahang, Malaysia are most likely to be flooded during the tropical storm Sonamu. At least 150 members of the Civil Defence Department have been put on standby in the state capital. Three Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) helicopters are currently put on standby to help the disaster victims.

Tropical storm Sonamu is forecast to strike Indonesia at about 12:00 GMT on 8 January. Sonamu is expected to bring 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 64 km/h (40 mph).

The Malaysian Meteorological Department in its latest update mentions Sonamu to cause strong winds and rough seas in the South China Sea.

Forecasters predicts downpour to coincide with high tide and Kemaman to be one of the worst-hit areas, along with Dungun, Besut, Hulu Terengganu and Setiu.
