The human voice is the most powerful tool that any human has. Using words and sounds the human voice is what teachers, lawyers, doctors and indeed virtually everyone in any field of life uses to influence others. People often criticise the “tone” with which something is said. A politician, who may make a perfectly sensible point but in the wrong “tone” will find him or herself pilloried and ridiculed. When what is said is actually analysed the words used will usually be completely inoffensive and the concept explained perfectly reasonable, whether you agree with it or not, but if the politician has used the wrong tone few look at the words or concepts but undertake their criticism based on the impression of what is said, rather than what is actually said. The same applies in human relationships, where the use of the wrong tone infers in the minds of the listener ideas which were not communicated by words. This problem hardly applies to the written word, but written words unfortunately influence us in a slower and less reactive way than the spoken word. If you are trying to persuade with what you say (and most of us are trying to persuade with most of what we say in all circumstances) you must pay attention to your tone. If you listen to what is said you must try to do the opposite and discount the tone and concentrate on the words.
